PING PONG TOURNEY

WINTER SHOW FEATURE PINAL STAGES TO-NIGHT SMART JUVENILE PLAYER A high standard of play was revealed in the ping-pong championship tournament, initiated last evening in connection with the Poverty Bay Winter Show, the matches proving very keen and holding the attention of a large number of spectators. A juvenile player, B. Forshaw, played exceptionally well to reach the - semi-final stage, to which the tournament had progressed by 10 p.m. The semi-finals and final matches will be played this evening, and will be an outstanding feature ol the closing session of the Show. The ladies’ championship, in which the entry is small but select, also will be carried to completion this evening.

BABY SHOW FINE SPECIMENS An event that created much interest at the Winter Show yesterday afternoon was the baby show, a large number of parents assembling at the stall where the judging was conducted. Mr. S. Bardwell’s prize for the best baby in the show- was awarded to baby Weston. Dr. Nina Muir officiated as judge, and at the conclusion she said that all the babies entered were fine specimens and in making the awards it had been difficult to separate them. Disappointment was expressed by the stewards at the number of entries, which totalled only 14, whereas at the previous Winter Show, in 1936, no less than (iO entries were received. The results were as under; — ' Girl under six months (1 entry).— Shirley Bowyer, 1. Boy under six months (1 entry).— Roger Stapleton Caulton, 1. Girl over six months and under 12 months (5 entries). —Baby Weston, 1; Phenclli Fawcett, 2; Fay Saunders, 3. Boy over six months and under 12 I months (5 entries). —Herbert William Jennings, 1; Gary Alfred Church. 2; Robert Attwood, 3. Baby over 12 months and under 18 months.—Baby Agnew, 1; Baby Hibdige, 2.
