AIM OF IL DUCE
VICTORY TO INSURGENTS CIVIL WAR IN SPAIN CRUSH ING OF REPUBLICANS TRUCE HOPES HAMPERED (Elec. Tol. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. June 24, 2.20 p.m.) LONDON, June 23. The Australian Associated Press understands that Signor Mussolini has made it clear to the Prime Minister. Mr. Neville Chamberlain, that Italy’s constant aim for complete and final victory for General Franco in Spain remains unchanged.
This undoubtedly tempers the recent optimism regarding the possibility of n truce in the Spanish civil war.
It is learned that the dispatch to Ihe Foreign Minister, Viscount Malifax. from the British Ambassador to Italy, the Earl of Perth, recounting his conversations with the Italian Foreign Minister, Count Ciano. shows clearly that the approval by II Ducc of a truce or the cessation of hostilities in Spain is contingent, not only on victory by the insurgents, but also on General Franco dictating the terms and extinguishing the Republican Government.
