SWEET PEA HINTS SELECTION OF CALVES By "Totara" Before sowing the sweet pea seed soak it in cold water lor about 12 hours. This softens hard-coated seeds and enables them to germinate as quickly as the softer coated ones. Many a failure would be prevented if gardeners did this, as a hard-coated seed may remain dormant for a long time. Some growers cut a small notch, skin deep, in the seed, opposite the eye, to assist the entry of moisture. There is another point: If the soil is not sufficiently moist, give it a thorough soaking by means of a fine mist spray, and wait for about a week before the next watering. Sandy soils, of course, dry out more quickly, but as long as there is moisture apparent in the soil the seed may be left to look after itself. Never let it be forgotten that over-watering, especially to cold ground, will very likely cause the seed to rot. Unfortunately, supplies of seed have not arrived yet. Calf Clubs The time for calves is now coming very close, so clubs will be having their meetings soon, it is expected, to elect their club leaders and secretaries and make plans for the year. A hint from a judge last year: Try and arrange for your clubs to pick calves born within certain dates. In a small club it is impossible to judge June and October calves together. In the bigger clubs you may have two classes, July-August, September-Octo-ber, or an August class and September class.
Look out for calf rearing notes at the end of this month or early in July.
