BRITISH GUNBOATS STAY
PATROL ON YANGTSE JAR. REQUEST REJECTED (Reed. June 15, 9 a.m.) SHANGHAI, June 14. British gunboats at Wuhu ancl Kiukiang have been ordered to remain there despite the Japanese request that foreign shipping should withdraw from the 200-mile stretch of the Yangtse River between Wuhu and Kukow. The British view is that the presence of the gunboats on the river is even more necessary to protect Bntish lives and property now that the Japanese drive to Hankow has begun. It is understood that Vice-Admiial Yarnell, the United -States Commander-in-Chief, has rejected the Japanese request. JAPANESE FLAGSHIP PROCEEDING TO NANKING (Reed. June 15, 10.30 a.m.) SHANGHAI, June 14. The Japanese fllagship which has been aground on a mudbank. was refloated to-day and le t for Nanking to direct the river attack on Hankow.
