GISBORNE APPLE EXPORTS
ONLY 11,221 CASES BETTER THAN LAST YEAR Apple exports from Gisborne this season totalled only 11,221 eases. Although this is a big improvement from last year, the total is a small one for a good season. The crops generally were heavier than in an average season, the fruit was well wp to the average quality, and the climatic conditions did not seriously interfere with the harvesting of the crops, but the quantity exported was considerably less than expected. The above review of the position was given by Mr. P. Everett, orchard instructor, who stated that the exports of recent seasons were:— Cases 1933 .. .. 10,899 1934 . . 22,134 1935 .. .. 4,523 1936 .. 21,783 1937 .. . . 2,689 1938 .. 11,221 During the season, two overseas ships loaded apples at Gisborne, the Dunedin Star on March 14, which took 3926 cases, and the Westmoreland on May 9, which lifted 1131 cases. The season was extended for a few days beyond the usual closing date, and the last Gisborne fruit accepted for export was On May 19. The following varieties were exported: Delicious, 3770 cases; Ballarat, 2514 cases; Dunns, 1311 cases; Dougherty, 1214 cases; Sturmer, 1075 cases; Cox’s Orange, 818 cases; Statesman, 196 cases; Granny Smith, 163 cases; Jonathan, 160 cases. Interruptions occurred to coastal shipping on a number of occasions, this resulting in quantities of fruit being held in cool store in Gisborne and increasing the costs appreciably.
