MOB OF SHEEP TRAPPED
NEARLY 50 ANIMALS LOST SEA LEAVES LOOS ON ROAD Considerable damage was done in the Opotiki district as a result of Wednesday night’s gale and high tide. Telegraphic communication to Whakatane was cut off, messages to and from Auckland being sent via Gisborne. Heavy seas washed large logs up on to -the main highway at Waitahi. Exceptionally higfi tides resulted in severe flooding at Wainui. A mob of sheep travelling from Gisborne to the. railhead was trapped in Mr. C. Robinson’s holding paddook at Wainui. Desperate efforts were made at an early hour on Thursday morning by a number of men to rescue the sheep. They were caught up in the fences. It is estimated nearly 50 sheep were lost.
