NEW CONTRACTS LET PURCHASE IN WAIROA LAND FOR 31 DWELLING'S PROGRESS OF WORK (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Cabinet has approved contracts under the State housing scheme for the erection of an additional 84 houses in various towns, and the purchase of numerous sections providing accommodation for 500 dwellings. Details of these contracts were announced yesterday by the Parliamentary Under-Secretary in Charge of Housing, Mr. J. A. Lee. Details of the housing contracts are:— Auckland. —A contract for three houses at Sunshine Block has been awarded to Mr. D. P. Dawson. Mr. H. J. Short has secured a contract for six houses at Mt. Albert. Mr. T. M. Taylor has secured contracts for 23 houses. A contract involving three single-house units at Devonport has been awarded to Mr. A. Allen. Morrinsville. —The co-operative tender of Aitken and O’Grady for three houses has been accepted. Wanganui.—Mr. G. H. Colley ha£ secured contracts for the erection of 13 single-house units, and one twohouse unit. Masterton.—W. Rigg, Limited, have obtained a contract for seven singlehouse units. Hokitika—The tender for Mr. J. L. Pugh for two houses has been accepted. Dunedin. —Mr. Ferguson has obtained a contract for four singlehouse units, and one two-house unit at Wakari. Mr. A. J. Price has obtained a contract for three singlehouse units, and one two-house unit. The co-operative tender of the Dunedin Amalgamated Construction Company, Limited, involving six singlehouse units and two two-house units at»Wakari has been accepted. Balclutha. —The Love Construction Company, Limited, has secured contracts involving seven houses and two semi-detached houses. Land Purchase Cabinet has also approved of the purchase of land as follows: — Auckland. —Area sufficient to accommodate 11 house units' at Mt. Albert, the area fronting Milles and Seymour streets. Point Chevalier.—Sufficient for approximately three houses. Tuakau.—Area sufficient to accommodate 12 houses. Welington.—Area in Adelaide* road sufficient to accommodate 48 flats purchased from the Education Department. Further .areas of land bought were situated in Lower Hutt, sufficient to accommodate approximately 39 houses on the Home Bush estate, comprising approximately 110 sections and the Wilton block of 87 sections from Wellington City Council: area in Cashmere estate, Khandallah, sufficient for two houses; area sufficient for 20 house units in St. Alban’s estate, Karori. <3l Houses Planned Wairoa. —Several areas providing accommodation for 31 house units. Hawera. —Area on the south road sufficient for 11 houses. Christchurch. —Area in Linwood avenue on which it is proposed to erect approximately 57 house units; approximately eight acres in Woodham, Kerr’s and Buckley's roads, Linwood. sufficient to accommodate 36 house units; block fronting Ferry road and Dyers street, Woolston, sufficient for seven house units; ten sections in Hillier street, Spreydon. Dunedin—Three properties at Wakari sufficient for 10 houses; area adjoining Calton Hill block, Caversham, sufficient for an additional six house units. Alexandra. —Area owned by the Alexandra Borough Council sufficient for nine house units.

Mr. Lee said the latest returns showed that up to the third week of last month 2089 houses were either under construction or completed in 54 towns, while 3378 houses had been advertised. More than 500 houses had been completed, the majority in the North Island.
