135,000 FEWER SHEEP
SALES FROM GISBORNE OUTSIDE DELIVERIES BIG INCREASE IN CATTLE Sheep sent from Gisborne to outside districts during the 12 months ended March 31 totalled 218,870, compared with 355,000 during the previous 12 months, a reduction of over 135,000. Cattle, on the other hand, increased substantially, and over 40,000 were sent away, more than 75 per cent of them bekig to the Waikato, which also absorbed over 90 per cent of the sheep sent out of this district. Figures relating to the number sent away have been provided by Mr. F. R. Bould, senior stock inspector, who keeps a record of them eacli yeai in regard to roadside and saleyards inspections for lice. This year the sheep were found cleaner than they have been before, and the number found to be lice infested was negligible. Figures relating to stock movements from Gisborne and Coast areas during the 12 months of the 1937-38 period are given below: — Cattle. Sheep. To Hawke’s Bay .. 0,920 12,000 Totals . . ■ • 40,100 218,870 During 193 G-37, about 10,000 cattle were sesit to Hawke’s Bay and 10.800 to the Waikato and Bay of Plenty, a j total of only 20,800. Sheep sent to outside districts during the past three years compare as follows: —1935-30, 320,000; 19.10-37, 355,000; 1937-38, 213,870.
