MAKARAKA NEWS

FANCY DRESS BALL SCHOOL FUNCTION (Herald Gaily bedecked with coloured streamers, greenery and clusters of balloons, the Makaraka-Matawhero Hall presented an animated scene on Thursday night, when the local school’s annual plain and fancy dress ball was held. The school committee had worked most assiduously and, together with a band of lady helpers, were congratulated on the success of the function. & The attendance was the largest for some years, there being many parents and friends present. The children's costumes were gay and varied and showed much forethought on the part of the parents. Folk dancing and games were indulged in and a gay time was spent, the children being capably supervised by- the headmaster, Mr. Harrison. A dainty supper was served by the ladies, after which the adults took the floor. During an interval national dances were contributed by Misses E. Livingston, M. Jonasen ana Betty Allan. The chairman of the school committee, Mr. McNee, expressed thanks to all who had assisted, while Mr. Harrison, on behalf of the teachers, all new in the district, said he was very pleased to see such a large gathering. The music for the dancing was played by Mrs. Ashdown, and the M.C. for‘the adults’ was Mr. Berry.
