EXPANSION IN BRITAIN MASS PRODUCTION URGE PROBLEM OF EFFICIENCY HIGHER STANDARD SET (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 1.30 p.m. RUGBY, May 4.: Replying to questions in the House of Commons as to the Government's aircraft expansion programme, Earl Winterton announced that he hoped to be in a position to make a comprehensive statement in the near future which would deal with many of the points raised. In another reply regarding the scope and objects of investigations by experts visiting America- and Canada, Lord Winterton said he was not at present able to add anything to the full reply he gave last week. Replying to a further question about mass production methods. Lord Winterton said that considerable deliveries had already been made of aeroplanes by methods approaching mass production. Large-scale production methods were being applied as far as was practicable consistent with the high standard imposed by considerations of efficiency.
Lobby correspondents to newspapers attribute to the Liberals the intention of asking for a discussion of the air estimates on Thursday, which is supply day and is allotted to the Liberal section of the Opposition.
