BOWLING PUNISHED

TWO CENTURIES FINGLETON AND MCCABE BRADMAN OUT AT 58 AUSTRALIA FIVE FOR 481 START AGAINST OXFORD (Elec. Tel. Copyrieht—United Press Assn.) (Rec. May 5, 11 a.m.) LONDON,' May-4. Playing their second game of the tour the Australian cricketers opened against the Oxford eleven to-day with a fine stand , the tally being 481 runs for five wickets at the drawing of stumps for the day. The teams are:—

Australia: D. G. Bradman, J. H. Fingleton, S. J. McCabe, W. A. Brown, A. G, Chipperfield. A. 'L. Hassett, M. G. Waite, E.'L. McCormick, L. O'B. Fleetwood-Smith, F. A. Ward, C. W. Walker, and E. S. White (twelfth man).

Oxford: J. Grover, E. Dixon, R. Kimpton, M. Walford, R. DarwellSmith, D. Macindoe, W. MurrayWood, R. Whetherly, J. Eggar, E. Eager and G. Evans.

Bradman won the toss. The weather was bright, cold and windy. The wicket was slightly damp. The attendance was poor. With the Oxford fielding brilliant, and the bowling very steady, Brown and Fingleton found runs hard to get and batted cautiously until lunch. After the' adjournment 100 was raised in 122 minutes. Both were attacking the bowling when Brown was caught in the slips. He had batted chancelessly for 145 minutes and hit seven fours.

Fingleton Powerful

Fingleton continued to hit with increasing power and, with Bradman quickly into his stride, the rate of scoring increased greatly. Fingleton was scoring all round the wicket. He reached his century in 185 minutes and the total of 200 was reached in the same time.

Bradman exhibited beautiful driving on both sides of the wicket. He reached 50 in 55 minutes and the partnership of 100 was realised after 57 minutes. Bradman was then. out. His score included eight fours.

McCabe gave a hard chance in the slips when 11 but was undaunted and continued in dashing style. Fingleton was caught at the wicket after 245 minutes of a safe and ouen enterprising display. He hit 13 fours.

The total of 300 came up after 248 minutes. Chipperfield began uneasily, but McCabe, with a great variety of strokes, reached 50 in 55 minutes. He had another life at 64. but continued in..dazzling form. Bowling: Punished • %

As the bowling faltered McCabe and Chipperfield punished it mercilessly, adding 100 in only 50 minutes. The total of 400 was reached in 300 minutes. .. . . .

Chipperfield, lifting Maclndoe for three fours in one over, passed 50 in even time. McCabe, with a crashing four, realised 100 in 94 minutes. Chipperfield, after a merry hour, was , caught at. the wicket. -His -total included nine fours. ."'.'~-

McCabe quickly followed after a display which was brilliant even for his standard. He batted 104 minutes and hit 20-fours. . Hassett and Waite batted soundly until stumps were drawn for the day.
