DICTATORS MEET

TOUR OF ROME TRIBUTES AT MEMORIALS WELCOME TO NAZI CHIEF STIFF AND FORMAL INSTRUCTIONS TO FASCISTS (Klpo. Tel. Copyright—United Press A:<sn.) (Reed. May 5, 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, May 4. A message from Rome states that a feature of the military display in honour of Herr Hitler was machinegun and artillery fire by batteries manned by 15-year-old boys. Herr Hitler and Signor Mussolini, escorted by motor-cyclists ahead and palloping cavalry in the rear, toured the memorials in Rome. Herr Hitler placed wreaths on the tombs of Italian kings, the Unknown Warrior and Fascists who died for the cause. Thereafter the dictators had a private conversation.

According to some reports, the crowds in Rome last night gave Herr Hitler a somewhat stiff and formal welcome, without any undue enthusiasm. Direction of II Duce The Rome correspondent of the British United Press learns from a reliable Fascist quarter that Signor Mussolini, regarding the visit of Herr Hitler to Rome as a formal return of his own visit to Germany, gave instructions that the reception should be official, moderate and dignified, without scenes of mob enthusiasm. Ttv.i Fascist leaders passed on the instructions to Fascist officers, who selected the Italians to line the streets. These officers told the selected Italians just how to act.

The Daily Mail has received a dispatch from Mr. Ward Price, who is in Rome, saying that he had a fireminute informal conservation with Signor Mussolini while the latter was waiting to welcome Herr Hitler. "II Duce, despite his multiple preoccupations, has improved his knowledge of English and spoke more fluently," says Mr. Price. "II Duce said that Italian public opinion was extremely pleased over the speech made in the House of Commons on Monday by Mr. Neville Chamberlain concerning the AngloItalian agreement. The speech was' considered to have rendered great service to the cause of international cooperation." Mi"- Price adds that the expression of 11 Duce showed genuine satisfaction as he referred to Mr. Chamberlain's friendliness to Italy. Herr Hitler and Signor Mussolini are to make broadcast speeches at a banquet on Saturday. The broadcast will be in several languages.
