BOROUGH WATER SUPPLY

RESTORATION TO-DAY FURTHER, DAMAGE CAUSED The restoration of the emergency water supply for the Gisborne borough was made this morning. Further damage has been done to the pipeline, and the complete restoration of the supply from the headworks has been delayed for some days, but the Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., is confident that the staff will able to link up the pipeline with the Waingake headworks within about a month.

Considerable damage was done last night to the temporary intake constructed following the flood of nearly a fortnight ago. The intake was scoured out, and the emergency breastwiork was completely washed away. It was not known how much damage had been done higher up than the breastwork.

Immediate steps were taken to effect sufficient repairs for the provision of an emergency supply, and Mr. Coleman stated that the water was restored this morning. The new damage had resulted in all attention being focussed on emergency measures once more, and the work of restoraing the permanent supply had to be temporarily neglected. However, once the emergency supply' was restored, efforts were resumed in the direction of renewing the pipeline. It was expected that the water would be very dirty on account of the abnormal rain and slips that had occurred in the stream.
