F. Reid, S.M., said in the Auck land Magistrate's Court that, althougr complainant's position was not as se cure as it was two years ago wher she won £12,000 in a sweepstake, she was still in a position to help to sup port, her mother. Grace Gould (Mr B. A. Barrer) was the complainan and Mary Pope (Mr. E. S. Bowie) th< defendant. '-Mr. Bowie sa:id complainant, wh< received £12,000 in 1936, now had as sets worth £6OOO and received a ne weekly income of £5/12/-, yet sh< contended she was unable to pay £ weekly toward the support of he mother, an old age pensioner aged 76 Complainant was not taking into ac count her husband's income, whic! was about £3OO a year. She said she had given away £6970 of her "win." Mr, Barrer said that when the present order was made: complainant was worth ..£9ooo,and her hsubanc Was earning £SOO a year. He latei lost his head and gambled mone\ away, with the result that her asset; were greatly reduced. In addition she had consented to the order because she thought her brother wa: dead. She later found he was alive and contended he was in a position tc contribute to his mother's upkeep. Hei mother, she alleged, had never taken any interest in complainant until the latter won the sweepstake. Complainant was now separated from her husband and had to maintain her crippled child. It was submitted that these altered circumstance.* entitled her to : variation of the order. The magistrate said that complainant was well provided for, and in a position to continue to contribute t< the support of hf- mother.
