ATTACK ON WOMAN ESCAPE PROM CUSTODY I (IVr L>r.-8s /Vfisoeiiition.) PALMERSTON N., this day. William Charles Norman, aged 39, labourer, of Otaki, was found guilty in the Supreme Court, first, of rape, and secondly, of assault so as to cause bodily harm, and thirdly, of assault. He was remanded for sentence. The young woman in the case said she advertised for a position as a housekeeper, Norman replying. The offences which were the subject of Ithe charges, occurred the first night she was in the accused's house, Nor-
nan hitting her on the head, face, . , and eves till she was physically incapable Of resisting further. When ;-. ■ managed to escape fr;m th« house, she got caught up in a b-\r\yy wire fence and Norman endeavoured to drag her inside again, but a M'aor came to her assistance. Subsequently, Norman was found guilty by another jury of attempting to escape from custody by jumping | from a train while being taken under | escort from Otaki to Wellington, he I was remanded for sentence on this, charge. __________
