When the police searched the gutted remains of a six-roomed house at Karaka. 30 miles south of Auckland, last night, they found the charred body of a middle-aged woman. Detectives are now on the scene investigating the circumstances, which may possibly be associated with the case in which an elderly woman was assaulted in her home a week ago. The house burned last night was owned and occupied by a spinster, Isabelle Josephine Bryant, aged 65 vears, who lived alone in a lonely part of the district. The fire was observed by neighbours at about 6 o'clock. They looked through a bedroom window, but there was no sign of Miss Bryant. All the windows and doors were apparently closed and locked. As no water was available the ine had to take its course. Later the body was found. It is believed to be that of Miss Bryant, but has not yet definitely been' identified.
