FINES TOTAL £ls

PROHIBITED DRIVER (’ANCELLATION EXTENDED Fines totalling £ls were imposed on Noel T. Hvdc when he appeared before Mr. E. L. Walton, S.M., today for driving without a license and for dangerous driving on April 2. The defendant was driving during a period when his license was cancelled, and the cancellation was extended for a further year. The defendant pleaded guilty to' both charges, while a third charge of passing a vehicle without a Clear view was withdrawn. Senior-Sergeant J. F H. Macnamara, who prosecuted, said that on April 2 the defendant was seen by the borough traffic inspector, Mr. T. G. Nowell,’ at 7.30 p.m., travelling towards town at the intersection of Dominion road, the defendant pulled out of the line of traffic, going at 40 miles an hour, and there was a terrific crash, as the defendant collided with a car going in the opposite direction. The inspector saw the defendant was under the influence of liquor. The defendant was before the court on April 25, 1937, the senior-sergeant continued, when, he was fined £5 for dangerous driving and his license cancelled for two years. The defendant had defied the order of the court, and had been driving since. He had been twice fined for dangerous driving before having his license cancelled.

Mr. M. R. Maude, for the defendant, said that the senior-sergeant had dug up all the black paint in presenting the picture against the defendant, but there were some better features. The defendant was one of those persons who took some time to realise their obligations. He was mechanically inclined, and, liked driving cars. The defendant had to support his aged and somewhat delicate mother. As a result of an accident, he was in receipt of insurance payments, and was unable to work. The magistrate said that the defendant was driving while his license was cancelled, and on that count he was fined £5 and costs, while for dangerous driving he was fined £lO and costs in view of the fact that he had had previous convictions on that charge and that he had had some liquor on that occasion. Costs totalled £1 18s. _______
