BASKETBALL AND RUGBY (Hornlil Correspondent.) The first basketball match was played at Matawai between MotU and a combined Matawai and Korangn team. The latter team, comprising mostly new members, had no combination, but Motu showed good form, combining well to win by 10 goals to 2. It is hoped that there will be one, if not two. teams formed in the Matawai district.

A curtain-raiser was played by the schoolboys of Matawai and Motu. Matawai won by 22 goals to 2. The first Cup match of the Motu Rugby Sub-union’s competitions was played on Saturday between Matawai and Motu, on the former’s ground. Motu won by 13 points to nil. The defensive work of the half-backs was particularly good.

A meeting of the Labour Party Committee was held on Friday evening, when it was decided to hold a dance in the hall on May 13 and at the same time to conduct a Paddy's market, at which turkeys, meat and vegetables will be sold.

Mrs. C. Davies, Wellington, is at present staying with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Gibson. —Miss J. McDonald is spending a holiday at Thornton, Whakatane, visiting her grandmother, Mrs. W. Grantham.

Miss D. Rutledge was thrown from her horse on Friday and her finger, which was caught in the monkey strap, was so badly torn that the end had to be removed.

A party to celebrate the seventh birthday of her daughter Helen, was given by Mrs. W. Mortlcman on Sa;urday afternoon. All the school friends and relations. were invited. Games were played in the grounds. A birthday cake, prettily decorated with seven kewpies, was cut for tea,
