RUGBY TRAINING
POVERTY BAY UNION ERECTION OF FLOODLIGHTS ALLOCATION OF NIGHTS Two floodlights will be available from to-day for Rugby practice at the Oval, according to a report made last evening by Mr. J. E. Mercer at the meeting of the management committee of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union.
He explained that the delay in providing lights had been caused by a breakdown of some of the Poverty Bay Electric-Power Board’s equipment for erecting poles, but that the other lights for Nos. 2 and 3 grounds would be available before the end of the week.
After a discussion on the allocation of nights, it was decided to allow all clubs to train on any night this week. The following draw was made for the future training nights:—Celtic, Monday; H. 5.0.8., Tuesday; Marist, Wednesday: Old Boys, Thursday. The suitability of some of those nights to the clubs was questioned, but the committee decided to allow the draw to stand for one month and reverse the position of the teams and trainings at periods during the season if the clubs desired that course. On the training nights the clubs will have two grounds at their disposal.
Schools’ Grant Explained
' The chairman said that the finance committee had discussed the question of a grant for the Poverty Bay Primary Schools’ Sports Association and had decided to ask the association if it contemplated any expenditure for the season. Last season the grant was made for a purpose specified by the association, he explained, and until then it had not been customary to make the vote so large a sum.
The secretary was instructed to advise the Waikohu Sub-union that the application for reinstatement of R. Williams from League to the union code had been granted by the New Zealand Rugby Union on April 28. Requests for financial assistance were received from the Motu and Waikohu sub-unions through their respective delegates, Messrs. French and Sceats, and the applications were referred to the finance committee.
The regrading of a Marist player, Mr. L. McMahon, from third grade to fourth grade was granted. Old Boys B were granted permission to travel to Tolaga Bay next Saturday to play a Tolaga Bay team. It was decided to ask the Poverty Bay Rugby Referees’ Association to continue this season with the judging of the Efficiency Cup competitions. Registrations Required.
On the motion of Mr. French, seconded by Mr. Jones, the secretary was instructed to advise all clubs that the names of players in all grades should be handed in as soon as possible for registration, players also to be advised that they were not insured until they had paid their subscriptions. The following minor grade selectors were appointed:—Junior, Mr. H. L. McNeill: third grade, Mr. A. H. Airey.
