MANGAPAPA SCHOOL
HEALTHY FINANCES A healthy position financially was shown in the balance sheet presented last evening to the biennial meeting of householders of the Mangapapa School. Although about £3OO had been spent from the general account, there was still a credit in that account of £l3 3s 2d and in the special account, built up by the committee and teaching stall', there was a balance of £24 5s Bd. The balance sheet and the report were adopted on the motion of the chairman, Mr. C. W. Izod, who commented favourably on the position. The chairman expressed his thanks to the committee, staff, and caretaker for their co-operation during his term of office. No election was required for the committee as the nominations did not exceed the number of vacancies. The chairman and secretary were appointed at a subsequent committee meeting( as. follows: —Messrs. H. L. Primrose, chairman, E. V. B. Simpson, secretary, J. T. Hill, F. If. Sell, W. Keith, F. H. Bull, C. Mitchell, and P. Sim.
TE HAPARA SCHOOL COMMITTEE RE-ELECTED Members of the committee whiel had held office during the past tern were re-elected at the annual meeting of householders at the Te Hapan School last evening. The householders charged with tin management of the school for the ensuing term are Messrs. W. T. Traue chairman, A. J. Corbett, J. Hislop, E. •J- Jury, C. S. Mackay, W. H. Miller and W. D. Tarr, lion, secretary.
AWAPUNI SCHOOL GOOD WORK lI Y C*OMMITTEE There was a good attendance of householders at the Awapuni School last evening, Mr. C. L. Harvey presiding. The chairman of the school committee, Mr. E. File, spoke of the committee’s work and outlined the improvements to the grounds. He mentioned that recently a wireless set. with a loud speaker in each classroom, had been installed. The financial statement showed that there was a balance in hand of £2O 18s 2d after the year’s working. The committee was elected as follows: —Messrs. O. If. Simmonds, If Scott, J. D. Martin, E. File, C. Pryce. Stenner, and N. Gedye. Mr. Harvey expressed, on behalf ol the householders, appreciation of the efforts of the retiring committee. . At a subsequent meeting of the committee Mr. E. File was elected chairman. Notification was received of Mr. C. G. Rigby’s appointment as headmaster of the school. TOLAGA BAY SCHOOL (Humid Correspondent.) The Tolaga Bay householders meeting was held in the High School last evening. The following members were elected to the school committee: —Messrs. A. W. Dover, A. Donald, E. Harries, O. G. James, G. Thompson, P. T. Weeks, Mrs. Sheathcr, Miss Goddard, and the Rev. N. F. Benham.
The retiring chairman, Captain J. M. Fraser, in commenting upon the work accomplished during the past year, pointed oitt. the advisability of furthering the scheme for the manual training school. Mr. W. Manowai requested that the inspector of health should be asked to visit the Maori children at an early date. He also asked for the co-operation of the Maori people and the Europeans in encouraging a feeling of brotherhood among thq children of both races.
The headmaster, Mr. T. G. McCullough, stated that a request had been forwarded, but that no nurse or doctor had visited the school during the past six months. The headmaster also outlined the innovations at the school and stated that his aim to make the school a success would be helped by the co-op-eration of the parents and all interested. Attention was drawn to the community singing, which was to be held on May 12 in the interest of the Tolaga Bay district dental clinic funds. A competition also would be held.
At a meeting of the newly-elected committee the Rev. N. F. Benham was elected chairman, Mr. A. Donald . secretary, and Mr. O. G. James treasurer. It was decided to hold the school committee meetings at 7.30 p.m. on the second Monday of each month. The necessity for medical inspection of the school was discussed and the secretary was instructed to write to the Health Department Mr. Harries and Miss Goddard were appointed to the visiting committee. PUHA SCHOOL Twenty householders assembled at the. Puha School last evening, when '.he following were elected. to the committee:—Messrs. J. McGregor, F. Greatbach, G. Brown, A. Mulholland and L. Moody. Votes of thanks were passed to Mr. A. Cameron, retiring chairman, and Mr, J. Graham, a retiring member of the committee. Special mention was made of the loss the committee had sustained in the departure from the district of Mr. G. Askew, who had served on it for 28 years. At a meeting of the new committee Mr. G. Brown was elected chairman and Mr. L. Moody, secretary. KAITARATAHI SCHOOL There was an attendance of only five householders at the biennial meeting of householders last evening in Kaitaratahi, and it was decided to call another meeting at a date to be ar ranged.
\V A ERE NO A-O-KURI SCHOOL
The meeting of householders of the Waerenga-o-kuri School was to have been held last evening, but was postponed on account of the condition of the roads and the inability of some of the settlers to attend. No date was fixed for the meeting.
RISRK SCHOOL The householders' meeting at Rere elected the following school committee: —Messrs. D. Falconer, chairman, A. J. Harris, T. Hooper, G. C. Falkner and C. M. Falkner. The gathering also discussed important improvements to the school, which were pending. PATUTAHI SCHOOL At Patutahi the Rev. H. Speight presided over an attendance of 27 householders. The report and the statement of accounts, which showed a balance in hand of £22 10s, were adopted. The election of the committee resulted: —Mr. T. W. Sewell, chairman, Mrs. R. Baty, secretary and treasurer, Messrs. J. Clacher, M. J. Hogan, C. McGrannachan, A. Waddell and S. Peters. WA I'] RENO A-A -II il\ A St 'IK )<>L There was an attendance of 12 householders at the Waercnga-a-hikn School. Mr. H. J. Lougher being appointed to the chair. The successful work of the committee was reported on, and the principal business, the election of a committee, resulted:—‘Messrs. A. Duncan, chairman, R. D. Moore, secretary, W. Jackson, L. Torrie and L. Williams. TL KAIIAKA SCHOOL All the members of the Te Karaka School Committee, comprising Mr. Charles Mills, chairman, Mr. and Mrs. R. Stephenson, Messrs. S. S. Smithers, T. M. Askew, C. G. Atkins and W. Nisbett, were re-elected. ■‘This has been a period of great progress in our school.” stated Mr. Mills in his report. “The extensive programme of ground improvements submitted to the Hawke’s Bay Education Board was approved and carried out at the beginning of 1037.” The assembly areas, tennis court and paths were concreted and the rest of the playground levelled off. Considerable progress had been made with the beautifying of the grounds. The roll of the secondary department had increased considerably. A school dental clinic would be completed in the near future and a nurse nad been allotted to the district.
