RUN OVER BY TRUCKS
DEATH OF WATERSIDER WEST COAST TRAGEDY (Per Press Association.) WESTPORT, last night. William Ernest Bird, aged 43, married, with a wife and two sons, a waterside worker employed by the Railway Department, lost his life at 4.50 p.m. to-day when breaking down a rake of trucks for loading on the Kalingo. He uncoupled three trucks and intended to hold those following, but either slipped or his foot was caught in the points, and he was run over, his leg being severed from the hip. The deceased was a native of Tamv/orth, Staffordshire, and had been 15 years in New Zealand. He was prominent in local Labour circles, being a Labour nominee for the coming Borough Council elections.
