FEELING IN POLAND
POSSIBLE EE PE RSU SSI 0N S LITHUANIAN DISPUTE CONCERN IN BERLIN (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. March 17, 11.15 a.m.) LONDON, March 16. A message from Warsaw states that the atmosphere is electric, public feeling strongly favouring vigorous action to end the unsatisfactory relations with Lithuania. It is understood that the Lithuanian Government drew the attention of the great Powers to Poland’s attitude and that Estonia and Latvia are trying to mediate the effort to avoid an outburst.
A Berlin message says that a serious view is taken in Germany concerning the dispute between Poland and Lithuania. It is even suggested that the dispute provided one of the chief reasons of Herr Hitler’s decision immediately to return from Austria.
The Lithuanian Minister in London has discussed with officials at the Foreign Office the recent incident on the Polish-Lithuanian frontier in which a Polish soldier was shot and fatally wounded. The British Minister in Warsaw has been instructed to raise the matter with the Foreign Secretary in Warsaw.
In the present nervous state of Europe it would be possible for a frontier incident of little significance in itself to give rise to serious repercussions, and accordingly the feeling in London ..is that a special responsibility rests at this moment on the Governments concerned not to magnify the incident in any way.
