SUPPLIES OF STEEL
SHORTAGE LESS ACUTE
POSITION IN AUCKLAND
(Special to the Herald.)
AUCKLAND, last night
While there are delays in obtaining structural steel in Auckland from Australia, there are fair stocks of certain classes held by merchants, the position apparently not being quite the same as it is ‘reported from Christchurch, where it is stated that there are no local supplies available. There are good stocks in Auckland of mild steel rounds and fair supplies of flat bars. There is, however, a big scarcity of girder plates, angles, and joists. It has been necessary to order seven months ahead for thes'e from Australia. By October, merchants state, deliveries will be four to five months in arrears, and by December, three months. Two years ago, Broken Hill was producing 10,000 tons a week of finished products. It is now producing 18,000 tons, and by the end of December its output will be 27,000 tons, when the shortage should be a thing of the past. In normal circumstances deliveries should take about two months from the order.
