BOARDS TO CONFER
EDUCATIONAL PROPOSALS HIGH SCHOOL DELEGATE A conference 01 educational authorities is to be held shortly in Wellington to consider the Government's Education amendment Bill, containing the Government’s new proposals.
A circular letter from the Auckland Grammar School Board was received by the Gisborne High School Board of Governors last evening stating that the Minister of Education, the Hon. P. Fraser, had agreed to a conference of secondary school boards in Wellington on April 7. The board was asked if the date was convenient and if the board could be represented. It was also explained that the education boards of the Dominion were holding a conference in Wellington, commencing on April 5, to consider the bill.
On the motion of Mr. 11. 11. DeCosla, it was agreed that the chairman, Mr. 1,. T. Burnard, should represent the board at the conference. Local Interest Removed A general discussion ensued on the subject, in the course of which the chairman explained that the proposed action to centralise the control of secondary schools in education boards would take away the local interest in the institutions. By bringing all schools to a common level it would tend to deprive the High School of the high standing it held in the ityAnother obvious objection to the bill was that the proposed centralising of control would have the opposite effect, from that intended. Instead of decreasing the administration expenses, it would result in increased costs. Mr. E. H. Baker considered that the scheme was not so much centralisation as consolidation. ( Mr. T. Todd considered that it would be a mistake to dissolve the board of governors, for with almost every subject that came before them they had experts on the board to advise them.
