INFANT SCHOOL OPENING

GISBORNE CENTRAL COMPLETE NEXT WEEK MINISTER’S VISIT HOPED The new infants’ school for Gisborne Central is expected to be completed next week by the contractor, Ml, George Smith, and endeavours are being itjade by the school committee to prevail upon thfe Minister of Education, the HOn. P. Fraser, to visit Gisborne to conduct the official opining. The chairman of the committee, Mr. J. H. Sunderland, stated to-day ihtit the committee hoped to have the school occupied by the end of this mbnth or earjy next month. No date had been definitely fixed yet, but the occupation of the building would not be. delayed any longer than could be hejped. The new building is one of the mbit modern of its kind. It is built on the open-air principle, its four, cllss-rooms Opening out to the sunny side with doors which can be opened or closed at Will, according to the weather conditions. Provision is made for individual teaching of. the little pupils as far as possible, and each will have his or her Own chair and table. The rooms are large and airy, and there is accommodation for abput 200 pupils.. The grounds are being t well laid out. Almost the entire property will be,transformed into lawn, together decorative shrubs and trees. Paths and:; ah assembly area have be'eh laid down in concrete, the assembly area being 18ft. wide and the entire width of the building, about 60ft. The new school is situated in thp section behind the dental clinic. When the pupils occupy the new building, the old infants’ school will be . offered for tender for demolition. It has done service for Over 50 years, and for a long time has been regarded as. totally unsuitable for modern education.
