MUNICIPAL LAWS
ALTERATIONS PROPOSED MEASURE INTRODUCED (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last night. Extensive alterations in the law relating to the work of local authorities are proposed in the Municipal Corporations Amendment Bill which was introduced in the House of Representatives to-day by Governor-Gen-eral’s message and read a first time. The bill is to be circulated during the recess, but will not be proceeded with until next session. ' The measure contains 38 clauses, most of which deal with purely routine questions. There is provision that where a candidate withdraws from a local body election within seven days of the poll, he forfeits his deposit. Another clause provided that special fees may be charged for the removal of refuse from apartment houses or flats. Authority is given for councils or town boards to insure members against accident while they are engaged on public duties, and authority is given for the establishment of municipal fire brigades. The bill also deals with the licensing of buildings for private meetings, the purchase of land for parking' places, and the installation of gas fittings. _____
