SUCCESSFUL CHALLENGE
KIRK CUP REMAINS SOUTH POVERTY BAY BEATEN DEFEATED BY 90 RUNS (Special to the Herald.) NAPIER, this day. Hawke’s Bay won the Kirk Cup from Poverty Bay yesterday by 90 runs after an interesting two-day cricket match played at McLean Park, Napier. The home team took charge in their second innings and declared with 229 runs for the loss ot six wickets. , _ The second innings of the Poverty 3ay team opened disastrously, James being caught by Reaney in the third .iver." Two wickets had been lost for only four runs when Evans held a oall sent up by Wells. Other wickets went comparatively cheaply and there started a fight for runs. Runs came slowly, and White was the only batsman with any confidence. The bowling was sound and the downfall of the batsmen probably came because they were too cautious. The Hawke’s Bay fielding was keen and the final wicket fell with 10 minutes to spare before the call of time. Details:— HAWKE’S BAY First innings .. • • • • ■ • 158 Second Innings D. A.
