INQUEST TO REOPEN
DROWNING TRAGEDY
NAVAL MEN'S DEATHS

AUCKLAND, last night
Approval of an application for the reopening of the inquest concerning the deaths of three seamen from the cruiser Leander, who were drowned off Karaka Bay, in Auckland harbour, on September 30, when a galley capsized .during a race, has been given by the Attorney-General, the Hon. H. G. R. Mason.
In the course of a telephone conversation from Wellington this morning, 'the Minister said that the application for the reopening of the inquiry had been placed before him? and after consideration he had decided to give his approval, but 'the final decision will have to be given by the Supreme Court.
All the papers, he added, had been sent forward.
When the inquest was held, the coroner, Mr. F. K. Hunt, returned a verdict of accidental death, but afterwards made an addition to his finding, which he forwarded to the UnderSecretary of Justice. In addition, Mr. Hunt said that since the inquiry closed, the Auckland harbourmaster had publicly stated that he notified the Achilles of the accident about an hour earlier than the time stated by Lieut, - Commander Lloyd in evidence at the inquest. If this was so, an explanation was required.
