TURNER'S TRIUMPH
STROKE FOR ENGLAND SYDNEY PRESS TRIBUTE (Reed. Feb. 10, 2 p.m.) SYDNEY, Feb. 10. The Sydney Morning Herald says that the eights race in the Empire Games rowing yesterday was a triumph for England's stroke, Turner, who only went into the stroke seat of the boat 12 days' ago. "It was a drastic change to make and that the English crew won so brilliantly was not only a tribute to the stroke, but proof that in the short period the crew had blended into Turner's style and made up a machine-like combination which gave the boat incessant run and smoothness," continues the Herald. "Australia won the fours in brilliant style, although the strong combinations from New Zealand and Canada fought desperately to hold the Australian four. "H. J. Turner, the Australian, sculling right up to the top of his form, gave a great display to win the sculls. The New Zealander, Smith, was placed at a disadvantage by the head wind. "The showing of Smith and Jackson, the New Zealand pair in the double sculls could easily be understood as both had had hard races earlier in the afternoon."
