NEGLECTED HEALTH
EFFECTS IN MIDDLE AGE MEDICAL MAN'S WARNING LONDON, Jan. 20. Dr. Leonard Williams, 76 years of age, at a Health Club luncheon, drew horrifying pictures of middle-aged persons, male and female,- who neglect their health. His portrait of the male was:—
"A bald-headed, obese, bibulous, gluttonous, smoke-sucking beast, who deserves all the gout, high blood pressure and arthritis he gets."
His portrait of the female was:— "A paint - bedizened, cocktailing, bridge-playing, smoking shapeless flounder who disfigures race meetings and the front row of the stalls." Dr. Williams declared that 90 per cent of a man's fatness was due to self-indulgence; a woman's was due to her glands. .. •: The man who reached 50 without learning how to keep fit was a fool. It was as necessary to be parsimonious about food as to be prodigal with fresh air. As greed aged a man, so fear of growing old aged a woman. "Relax! Be philosophical!" he said. "Be sure that your eyesight and hearing are good. , "Bad sight gives woman crows feet; they frown at their best friends, their hair prematurely turns grey, and their digestion, like their temper, becomes difficult." The chairman, Sir William Crawford, who is 59, said: "It is the state of mind that matters. I never started to live until,! was 40. Now I feel 22."
