LIVE STOCK MARKET

SALES AT ADDINGTON

LAMBS DOWN 2/- A HEAD

BEEF ALSO CHEAPER

(Per Press Association.)

CHRISTCHURCH, last night

Entries were largely increased today at the Addington market, the total sheep entry being 27,000 to. 28,000, mostly in the store pens. Good breeding ewes and wether lambs sold well at a shade firmer prices, as did fat lambs.

Fat sheep were easier by about 2s a head on account of the reduction in export schedule, and fat cattle were down by 20s a head, the main cause being the heavy entry.

Twelve thousand to 13,000 store lambs were penned and there was a slightly improved sale for wether lambs, the best of which made from 18s to 19s 2d and medium rape sorts from 16s 6d to 17s Cd. Carry-over lambs ranged from 13s Od to 14s 9d.

In the store sheep section about 5000 were penned, mostly ewes, including some good Chatham Island lines. The best of these made to 34s 3d for twotooths, and 30s for the remainder, and four and five-year ewes from the same quarter 24s 6d to 25s 6d. Local oneyear ewes averaged from 16s Gd to 18s 6s, the best going to 21s.

Eighteen hundred fat lambs were penned, and there was a keen sale at full schedule rates of 73d per lb. The fat sheep export schedule lias been reduced and this was reflected in today's market by a drop of about 2s a head for all sorts. Except for a small entry of heavy wethers, the best wethers sold at from 31s to 34s 4d: good to medium, 28s to 30s; and lighter, down to 225. The best ewes made from 22s to 27s 7d; good to medium, 18s Gd to 21s; freezing, 14s Gd to 17s. There were some passings.

A total of 508 fat cattle were penned and there was a weaker market by 20s a head, except for prime mediumweight steers, which were down by 10s to 15s. Over-supply and cheaper prices of mutton were the main causes of the decline. The best beef made to 37s per 1001 b.; medium to good, 32s 6d to 355; and inferior, down to 255. The best steers sold at from £l4 to £l7; good, £l2 to £l3 10s; and inferior, down to £9. The best heifers sold to £l2; best cows, down to £ll 10s. There was an average penning of fat pigs and prices were unaltered. Porkers made from 34s 6d to 51s 6d, the average per lb. being 6d to GJd. Baconers ranged from 55s 6d to £4 7s 6d, the average per lb. being 53d to 6J. Weaners and slips weve easier and heavier stores were unchanged. Weaners realised from 10s Gd to 18s 6d; slips, 19s Gd to 22s 8d; and scores, 26s to 28s Gd.
