SEIZURE OF PROPERTY
INTENTION OF JAPANESE SECURING REPARATIONS (Reed. Feb. 5, 11 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 4. The Daily Telegraph’s Shanghai correspondent states that the .Japanese may seize Chinese property worth millions of pounds, if the decision announced by the spokesman of the Japanese Embassy is fully put into effect.
The spokesman to-day disclosed the seizure .of the residence of General WU Heh-Chen, Governor of Shantung, and former Mayor of Shanghai. It is rumoured that General Wu is confined to his home under a military guard. The spokesman added that the authorities intended to seize the property of all Chinese engaged in anti-Japanese activities, regardless of its location. The question of whether the property of taxpayers within the International Settlement should be protected instantly arises. The decision is believed to be connected with Japan's determination to secure reparations from China by all possible means.
