KOPUAWHARA NEWS

THIS MONTH’S CONCERT (Herald Correspondent.) It is just a year ago since Kopuawhara held its-first big concert, and on February 24 another big concert will be conducted to raise funds for the New Zealand Labour Party. The Hill Billy’s Band is an entirely new - organisation, comprising mostly players from No. 2 Camp. They have been rehearsing for some time, with the result that they will be a special feature of the programme. As well as being talented as a combination, each player is a gifted entertainer and will be heard in solo as well as concerted numbers.

“The “Peeps at Life” sketches which were so popular at the last concert once more will be a feature of the programme. “The Long Arm of the Law” and “Mala, the Beautiful Spy” are well worth seeing. Further details of this attractive programme will be announced later. The whole of the valley is taking a keen interest in this concert. A dance is to follow, the music for which will be supplied by the Kopuawhara Hill Billy’s Band.

The newly-appointed schoolmaster to the Kopuawhara School, Mr. Read, has taken up his residence here, accompanied by Mrs. Read and family. —Miss Thompson, who was appointed to the local school in place of Miss Bullen, who /resigned at the end ol last term, has arrived at N». 3 Camp. Mr. E. P. Meachen, M.P. for Wairau, addressed a large gathering in the Y.M.C.A. Hall at No. 3 Camp on Tuesday evening. The Kojiuawhara Cricket Club held a meeting on a recent evening. It was announced that the Flaxmere club, Hastings, had issued a challenge, which it was decided to accept. It is hoped that a strong team will be available to travel to Hastings shortly. Owing to an injury to one of the orchestra, it was decided to postpone the cricket dance advertised for February 10 to some future date as yet not decided upon. The Kopuawhara Tennis Club’s ladder matches played this week have resulted as follows:—A. M. Brodie d. H. Johnston, 6 —l, 5 —6, B—6; T. Kelly, jun., d. E. Cater, 9—4; S. Matcnga, sen., d. A.
