VARIETY OF SUBJECTS
TELEGRAPH CONFERENCE N.Z. DELEGATE PRESENT RADIO SERVICE PROBLEM (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last night. Referring to the international conference to discuss telegraph, radio, and telephone questions, which began in Cairo on February 1, the Post-master-General, the Hon. F. Jones, announced this evening that the New Zealand delegate was Mr. M. B. Esson, formerly second assistant-secre-tary of the Post and Telegraph Department, and at present the Dominion’s representative in London on the Imperial Communications Advisory Committee.
“The proposals set down for discussion at the conference cover a variety of subjects,” said Mr. Jones, “and it is expected they will occupy the attention of delegates for approximately two months. “As regards the telegraph service, the most important proposals to be considered are those of the various administrations regarding the adoption of a uniform rate for overseas telegrams.
“In the field of radio considerable discussion may be expected on the question of the redistribution and use of bands and of the frequencies allocated to the different radio services.
“Owing to the rapid growth of radio Communication generally, there is congestion in Europe and America in certain frequency bands, particularly in those at present available. Shortwave broadcasting and the reallocation of frequencies will become a matter of urgency. In this connection any proposals which may cause additional sources of interference with New Zealand services are being watched by the Dominion’s delegate.
