PIG CLUB ACTIVITY

VISIT FROM MR. M. J. SCOTT CONFERENCE IN GISBORNE Activity in the pig club movement in the Gisborne district will be stimulated bv a visit from Mr. M. J. Scott, superintendent of the scheme in the Dominion, who is expected here next week. Advice of Mr. Scott's arrival was brought by Mr. D. G. Beattie, supervisor for the Bay ot Plenty-Poverty Bav Pig Council’s area, when he returned last night from a conference in Palmerston North. Mr. Beattie stated to-day that Mr. Scott, would arrive at Wairoa on Tuesday, and would visit Gisborne and the Coast on Wednesday, addressing a meeting of Gisborne subcouncil members and other club members in the evening. Mr. Scott will leave for the Bay of Plenty on Thursday.

While in Palmerston North at a conference of district supervisors and others interested, Mr. Beattie stated that they had the opportunity of hearing a most interesting address by Dr. John Hammond, who is visiting New Zealand ta advise the Department of Agriculture on stock troubles. Dr. Hammond also judged the Royal Show freezing classes on the hooks, and after giving the awards dissected some of the carcases to explain the basis of his judgment. When addressing the gathering, Dr. I-lammoncl said that New Zealand porker carcases compared more than favourably with any of the imported porkers in London, but there was still much room for improvement in the baconers, which were generally too short and too fat. although there had been an improvement in length during the past two years. Tiie Royal Show pigs were judged on the hoof at the Royal Show by Mr. 11. M. Pierson, pig extension officer at Hamilton, and the awards he made were generally upheld by Dr. Hammond when giving hix judgment on the hooks.
