GARDEN CIRCLE

KAWAIvAWA MEETING (Herald Correspondent.) At “Kiritihi,” the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Metcalfe, last Tuesday the first meeting of the Kawakawa Garden Circle for this year was held. There was a good attendance and a delightful time was spent. Mrs. C. Hughes, the president, gave an interesting talk on “Summer Cleaning of Gardens and Garden Pests.” The roll call, “Don’ts for the Garden,” was well responded tb, a pleasant stroll in the garden following. Owing to tile weather keeping fine, a few exciting sets of tennis were played. Afternoon tea was served in the spacious drawing-room, which looked gay witli bowls of blue hydrangeas. The winners of the competitions were: —Social competition; Mrs. H. Fairlie, 1; Mrs. R. Hughes, 2. Peas: Mrs. N. Branson, 1; Mrs. C. Cowan, 2; Mrs. H. Fairlie, 3. Tomatoes: Mrs. C. Cowan, 1: Mrs. H. Fairlie, 2; Mrs. S. Rudland, 3. Zinnias: Mrs. C. Hughes 1; Mrs. S. Rudland, 2; Mrs. N. Branson, 3. Best, bloom in garden: Mrs. R. Hughes, 1; Mrs. G. Fraser, 2; Mrs. S. Rudland, 3. Jug of daisies: Mrs. IT. Fairlie, 1; Mrs. C. Hughes, 2; Mrs. C. Cowan, 3. Hydrangea bloom: Mrs. C. Hughes, 1; Mrs. N. Branson, 2. Amongst those present were Mesdames W. Metcalfe, C. Hughes, N. Branson, M. Halliwell, S. Rudland, C. Cowan, G. Fraser, R. Hughes and IT. Fairlie; Misses W. and 13. Metcalfe and N. Olphcrt.
