AGRICULTURAL POST

NEW ASSISTANT DIRECTOR MR.' FAWCETT APPOINTED (Por Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The appointment of Mr. E. J. Fawcett, M.A. .(Cambridge), to the position of assistant Director-General of Agriculture, is announced by the Hon. W. Lee Martin. He states taht Mr. Fawcett’s practical experience of farming before the war, his wide range of activities in the department and the Government service, and his academic qualifications equipped him fully for the position. Mr. Fawcett was born at Nelson in 1892. He went to the war with the seventh reinforcement as a second lieutenant, was wounded at Passchendaele, gaining the Military Cross, and discharged with the rank of captain in 1918. Shortly afterwards he was awarded the Kitchener Memorial Scholarship and entered Cambridge under a special dispensation. On the completion of a year he was awarded an Expeditionary Force Scholarship and spent three years at Cambridge, specialising in agriculture and economics. He returned to New Zealand in 1922 and has since been in the service of the department.
