AN OFF DAY
TENNIS AT AUCKLAND NEW ZEALAND PLATE STEEVENS IN SEMI-FINAL (Pnr Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. It was practically an off day in the New Zealand tennis championships which continued in threatening weather with a steady breeze. Early morning events comprised six singles, five men's arfu one women's, in the plate events for those players eliminated in the first two rounds of the championships. The only really important rubbers start at 2.30 p.m. the semi-finals of the women’s doubles, the Poole sisters (champions) against Misses B. L. Bishop and PCooke, and the 'Beverley sisters against Misses D. Miller and B. Gould. Rain stopped play at noon. Results up to No. 1 stage of the New Zealand Plate were as follows: Men's.— Quarterfinals: M. T. Wilson (Auckland) beat A. J. Dickie (Taranaki), 6—4, 6—o; J. J. Steevens (Poverty Bav) beat D. H. Ward (Wairarapa), 6—3, 7—5; J. D. Mitchell (Auckland) beat J. N. Lowry (Hawke’s Bay), 6 —4, 6 —3; O. N. Bald (Wellington) beat M. L. Lampe (Wanganui), 3—6, 6—4, 6—l. Women’s Singles.—Quarter-finals: K. Armstrong (Canterbury) beat J. Forrester (Wellington), 6—2, 4—6, Mixed Doubles.—Third round: N. F. N and Miss J. Bedford (Wellington) beat D. G. and Mrs. France (Wellington), 4—6, 6—l, 6—4; R. D. Sharpe (Manawatu) and .Miss M. Glenny (Hawke's Bay) beat C. F. Penfold and Miss D. Dickey (Canterbury), 6—2 2 — 6, 6—2. Quarter-finals: M. T. Wilson and Miss E. Stewart (Auckland) beat G. A. Pearce and Miss E. Plummer (Wellington), 2 6, G 1, 0 3; r, W. Smith and Miss Pamela Cooke (Auckland) beat K. W.
