The estate of the late Sir Algernon Thomas, K.C.M.G., formerly emeritus professor at; Auckland University College, has been valued for probate purposes at £40,000. To carry out a wish expressed by the late Sir Thomas, members of the family are presenting as gifts to Auckland city the historic lion rock and 100 acres of native bush at Piha, on the west coast, about 30 miles from Auckland. Lion rock is a high rugged landmark on one of the favourite west coast beaches, and is surrounded by water at high tide. It is proposed that a portion of the park should be used as a camping ground for organised parties of young people from Auckland.
