MOTORISTS’ ESCAPE

MISHAP NEAR TE REINGA

When a motor car in which they were travelling skidded in the loose shingle after crossing the Kaiterahi bridge, about two miles south of Te Reinga, yesterday, a Ruakaturi farmer, Mr. W. Berry, and his daughter had a narrow escape from serious injury. After a drop of 25ft. the car came to rest overhanging a further 75ft. drop. The car, a four-door sedan, was driven by Miss Berry and at the point where the accident occurred there was a difficult right-angle turn. The vehicle crashed through the railings at the side of the road and turned completely over.

Those who saw the car after the accident said it seemed miraculous that the vehicle had not fallen to the bottom of the ravine. Mr. Berry received minor head injuries, and his daughter suffered severe shock. After considerable difficulty a breakdown truck from Gisborne brought the badly damaged car back on to the road.
