LAWN TENNIS

ONE CLASS FINISHED MISS M. HAISMAN’S WIN P.B. DISTRICT TOURNEY

One section of the district championship and handicap lawn tennis tournament was finalised at the Whataupoko courts this afternoon, Miss M. Haisman defeating Mrs. C. H. Wells in the deciding game of the ladies’ handicap singles class. Miss Haisman played a strong game throughout, and though her opponent maintained a steady defence, the issue was decided in straight sets. From the position of the various sections at 3.30 p.m., it seemed likely that other classes would be finished before the close of play to-day. The combined doubles sections were still backward, but otherwise the tournament was well advanced. Results of this afternoon’s play to 3.30 o'clock were as under: — CHAMPIONSHIP SECTION Men’s Singles

PLAY RESUMED PLUNKET SHIELD GAME CANTERBURY BATTING (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Play in the Plunket Shield match between Canterbury and Otago was resumed this morning at 11.30 o’clock. After heavy rain overnight, the outfield was dead and the pitch was greasy, the conditions being in favour of Otago. In Dunning’s first over Fraser failed to hold a difficult catch in the slips from Stokes. The wicket improved considerably during the morning and Menzies and Stokes found no difficulty in the bowling. Both batsmen adopted aggressive defensive tactics, loose balls being dealt with severely. Dunning kept the batsmen very quiet and when a change looked overdue. Menzies returned one to him in the last over before lunch. There was an.extremely dull period of play after lunch, both Stokes and Cromb facing Dunning and Elmes with the utmost caution. Ten overs produced only 17 runs. Scores:— OTAGO First Innings .. , 172 CANTERBURY First Innings J. L. Kerr, b Silver .. .. 14 E. A. Gascon, b Dunning .. .. 14 R. E. J. Menzies, c and b Dunning 49 D.
