DROWNING AT PIHA
AUCKLAND RESIDENT WASHED OFF LION ROCK (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. A drowning fatality occurred at Piha yesterday afternoon, when an Auckland resident, William John Shaw, aged 53, of Kingsland, was apparently washed off Lion Rock into deep water. Mr. Shaw had been staying at a bach at Piha and went fishing from the northern side of the rock. Two and a half hours later some people who were on the beach noticed that something was floating in the water and attracted the attention of the surf life-saving patrol, a rtiember of which swam out from the beach for a distance of 130yds, where he found Mr. Shaw’s coat floating.
Thirty yards further out he discovered the deceased floating beneath the surface of the water. The man was hastily brought to the shore by a life line and attempts at resuscitation were maintained for a considerable time, but without success. The deceased was a gardener at the Domain and had been employed by the Auckland City Council for the past 20 years.
