AMONG TREE-TOPS
INFLAMMABLE GASES The rather unusual circumstance of bad bush fires in standing green timber during a period of heavy humidity was commented upon when the widespread devastation caused by the forest fires which occurred in the National Park region at the beginning of December was described in an interview by Mr. A. Seed, secretary of the Dominion Federated Sawmillers’ Assocation. It was estimated, he said, ‘that the losses amounted to 51,000,000 ft broad measure of timber, representing over £500,000. At the time when the fires started there was a period of low humidity, lower than ever previously recorded in New Zealand, he said. That meant that the coniferous trees would be •giving off resinous fumes creating an envelope of inflammable gases round the tree-tops. That this was the case in the recent fires was demonstrated by the fact that a fire was seen to leap upward of 10 chains and literally explode treetops by means of falling sparks.
