ARRESTS OF MERCHANTS
HAMBURG PERTURBED CURRENCY REGULATIONS DECAPITATION PENALTY (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Dec. 8, 3.15 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 7. The Hamburg correspondent of the Daily Telegraph says that a series of arrests of leading merchants during the past three months has perturbed the business community. Many directors of important firms have been taken into custody and charged with violating the complicated currency regulations.
General Goering has ordered an independent investigation, and it is hoped the cases will be settled out of court, but the Chamber of Commerce has protested to the Nazi Governor. Apparently the alleged offences are merely technical, while the arrests are damaging the credit of leading firms. A fantastic situation is that those arrested are technically liable to decapitation for economic sabotage under General Goering's own law. Herr Lademann, a member of Emden and Sons, a most esteemed mercantile firm, committed suicide in gaol.
