FAT LAMB COMPETITION

RECORD GISBORNE ENTRY GOOD QUALITY BUT HEAVY Local judging in the Gisborne section of the Meat Board’s district fat lamb competition was commenced late this afternoon, and the results were not available at 2.15 p.m. The entry was a record for Gisborne, GO pens coming forward from 00 owners. The quality of the first 120 lambs slaughtered at the Kaiti greezing works to-day was regarded as excellent, and much about the same standard as those in the competition last year. Most of tiie lambs, however, were rather heavy for competition purposes. The average of the first 40 was nrobablv between 331 b. or 241 b., whereas at Hawke's Bay and Wairoa the weights were round about 311 b. and 321 b. Two of the lambs this afternoon exceeded 401 b., this weight disqualifying them from participation in the competition, while a number ranged between 271 b. and 301 b. The judge for the local competition was Mr. J. Barr, supervising grader for the Meat Board in the Hawke's Bay and Poverty Bay districts. During the afternoon a number of owners of exhibits and other farmers inspected the entries. Mr. A. H. 11. Unwin, secretary of the Wairoa A. and P. Society, also was present. The Gisborne arrangements were organised by the Poverty Bay A. and, F, Association.
