QUICK PASSAGE IN HOUSE
ARBITRATION MEASURE CREATING SECOND COURT (Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. In passing the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Amendment Bill at one sitting, the House of Representatives disposed of an impoitant Government measure yesterday. As a preliminary, it had put through all stages several local bills which were not contentious, and there were no serious differences of opinion over the arbitration measure, for the Minister presented details of the court’s hopeless condition of arrears in meeting its obligations to consider awards and compensation cases, thus fully justifying the main provisions of the bill, those of constituting an additional temporary court and enabling powers, including those of considering awards, to be delegated to stipendiary magistrates. The latter provision was contested by the Hon. A. Hamilton, Leader of the Opposition, but he failed to carry his point and the bill passed exactly as it came from the Labour Bills Committee. To-day’s sitting of the House is being devoted to the estimates.
