HIGHWEIGHT TO SHY SON AND HEIR’S SPRINT (Per Press Association.) MASTERTON, this day.* The Masterton races opened today in fine but dull weather. The course was in good order. Results were: Nursery Handicap.— Gay Son (Broughton), 1; Peerless, 2; Twenty Grand, 3, Scratched: Colport, Ivar, Imogen and Piastre. Won by one and a-half lengths, and half a length. Time, 50sec. Lansdowne Handicap: 1 Son and Heir, 1; 4 Lucullus Lad, 2; 2 Allunga, 3. Scratched: Rotorna, Colleen Gain, Revival, Lady Montana, Toorak and Jewish Lad. Won by half a length and two lengths. Time, 1.40 4-5. Highweight Handicap.—2 Shy (Burgess), 1; i Hazoor, 2; 3 Pladie, 3. All started. Won by half a length, and two and a-half lengths. Time, 1.42 2-5. Maiden Lady Chat, 1; 2 Sigurd, 2; 12 Owgli, 3. Scratched: •Anubis, Star Lad, Ruling Spi, and Happy Heels. Won" by two lengths, and four lengths. Time, 1.15 2-5.
WASHDYKE RACES SUPEREX WINS HURDLES COCKSURE’S STAKES (Per Press Association.) TIMARU, this day. The spring meeting of the South Canterbury Jockey Club was opened on the Washdyke * course to-day in the presence of a good attendance and with the track in excellent order. The weather conditions were favourable. Results were:— Otaio Hurdles. —2-3 Superex (W. Hogan), 1; 5-4 Fireguard (R. Beale), 2; 1-1 Silver Sight (E. Ridgway), 3. Won by a head each wav. Time, 2.43 3-5. Spring Stakes—l-1 Cocksure (L. J. Ellis), 1; 5-2 Prince Flaneur (P. Spratt), 2; 10-10 Steer Clear (A. Messervey), 3. Scratched: Warden’s Gift and Heidelberg. Won by a head, and two lengths. Time, 1.1. .Teschemakers Handicaps— i 7-7 Argentic (G. Watson), car. 8.5, 1; 5-6 Rebel Lad (C. T. Wilson), 2; 3-3 Last Refrain, 3. Won by half a length, and a head. Time, 2.0.
Washdyke Trot. —3-3 Policy (M. Holmes), 1; 1-2 Bing Crosby (E. J. Smith), 2; 13-12 Ace High (J. Bryce, jun.), 3. Won by a head, and two lengths. Times, 3.26 2-5, 3.22 2-5, and 2.22 1-5.
FLEMINGTON GALLOPS TALKING RUNS WELL (Fine. Tnl. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Oct. 14. 1.45 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Oct. 14. At Flemington the gallops took place on the course proper with the flags 30 feet out. Talking, assisted by Joan Darling, ran an impressive six furlongs in 1.153 and is very fit. St. Evenage, assisted by Prince Pardon ran the 10 furlongs in 2.13 1-4. Gene Tout beat Empiric over seven furlongs in 1.36. On the inside grass Vaalmore moved scratchily over 11 furlongs in 2.43 J. Beauroi went well over a mile m 1.42. On the sand Hua beat Cultra over four furlongs in 52,
