South Africa has signified its intention of including a sculler in its Empire Games team. England, Canada, Australia and New Zealand also will be competing in this event. The entries for the eight-oar event so far are from Canada, Australia arid New Zealand.

The latest Sydney papers to hand have the account of the New South Wales schoolboys’ athletic championships in them, and the following art the results of the long jump undei 17: Brian Dunn, of the Riverview College, won with jumps of 20ft. 7'in. 2011. During this meeting no less than 31 records were established, some of the outstanding ones being: Long jump, under 16 years, 20ft. 6Jin.; under 18, high jump, sft. 9in. • H. Dent, of the Sydney High School, won the hop. step and jump under 16 years with a great effort of 43ft. ljin.

Stan. McCabe started the season well in Sydney this year by scoring 124 in the first match, the 100 being knocked up in 80 minutes. He had 20 fours and a sixer in his scoring strokes.

Miss Joyce Barry, the 18-year-old Australian girl who recently rode from Sydney to Melbourne in 50hr. 47min., broke the previous record of Miss Billie Samuel by no less than 22hr. 38min. She had a good ride nearly all the way and her only puncture was at the start of the race, while she also had a blow-out at 348 miles. She rode 100 miles in 7hr. 12min.: 200 miles in 19hr. Ismin.: 284 miles, half-way, in 25hr. 50min.; 400 miles in 3Ghr. 45min.; and 500 miles in 45hr. 15min. Her programme allowed for 18 hours’ sleep, but Mis? Barry only had four hours on the ride. This ride is only llhr. 4min. 48sec. slower than that established by the redoubtable Australian cyclist. Hubert Opperman.

Ossie Nicholson also passed the world’s record for the one year’s ride —45,3833 miles—on September 29, the same day as Rene Menzies did in England, although the Frenchman’s effort was 100 minufes faster than Nicholson's.
