Prime Minister’s Challenge
Sir, —I was astounded to hear Mr. Wilkinson’s attack on the Leader of the Opposition in connection with the challenge made to the latter by Mr. Savage regarding the election. In my opinion, Mr. Hamilton was wise not to .accept the responsibility of putting the country to the expense of an election before the due date and incidentally giving the Government the chance of saying: “The Opposition forced this election.’’ Further than that, the Government would be able to make a song about llie fact that they had not had their full term of office, and, therefore, their policy had not had the chance of being given a proper trial. Whatever else Mr. Savage may be, he is a very shrewd politician and his assumed naivete helps him very considerably to capitalise any situation. He has a sense of showmanship and had Mr. Wilkinson been the Leader of the Opposition he would have fallen into Mr. Savage’s trap. Any political tactician can see that Mr. Hamilton did the right thing.—-Yours, etc., B, WARY.
