A remit by the Taneatua branch was carried at a meeting of the Bay of Plenty Farmers' Union impressing upon the Government the necessity for paying the fanners prices that would enable them to pay wages comparable with other sections ol industry in order that competent workers might be attracted to the farms.

The displeasure of the Napier Licensing Committee at the large number of convictions recorded in Napier for being on licensed premises after hours was expressed at yesterday's meeting of the committee by the chairman, Mr. .1. Miller, S.M. "It is regrettable that so many cases have occurred," the chairman remarked in adding the hope that the future would show a definite improvement.

The jerseys of the Rugby player., representing" the combined Poverty Bay-East Coast-Bay of Plenty unions on'Seotember 18 against the Springboks in Gisborne will be numbered in a different manner than usually, the forwards being numbered from one to eight and the backs from nine to 15 Before this was decided upon last evening by the management committee of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union it was exDlained that in the past patrons had found it difficult to pick out the larger numbers in the pack and the smaller numerals were easier to read on the men in the tight. The members of the committee were all agreeable to the change and the motion met with no opposition.

The International Rugby rules will be observed in the playing of all curtain-raiser matches played on September 18 on the Oval in Gisborne according to a decision reached last evening at the weekly meeting of the management committee of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union. The question was raised by the representative of the Poverty Bay Rugby Referees' Association, Mr. E. N. Tasker, and some members were inclined to think that it would lead to confusion among the players. Mr. Tasker said that in the preliminaries to the first test in Wellington the international rules were played and he considered that it would give the patrons an insight into the rulings that would be in force dunn* the playing of the Springboks againsl the combined team.

The driver and four passengers in a service car travelling from Napier to Wairoa last evening had tin exciting experience when their car ran into a slip on a bend in the highway skirting the shores of Lake Tutira. The slip, one of several of no great size, but sufficiently deep to overturn a car, was on the blind side of the bend, and the Wairoa-bound vehicle was into the debris before the driver could check its speed. The car swung completely round, and then turned on its side, with its hood resting against the slip and the wheels toward the outer edge of the road. The passengers, on arrival at Wairoa, gave unstinted praise to the driver of the car, Mr. Fred. White, and declared that but for his skill the accident would have been a serious one. The occupants of the capsized vehicle scrambled out without even a scratch, and were picked up later by another car and conveyed to their destination.

Reporting to last evening's meeting of the management committee of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union, Mr. D. McLeod said that a request had been made to him to ask the permission of the union to place on duty six extra men to control the traffic at the Springboks' match in Gisborne on September 18, the union to find the expenses of those men. The request, had come from the Gisborne Borough Council and several members objected to the principle of the request, maintaining that the roads were out of their jurisdiction. On the motion of Mr. K. F. Jones, seconded by Mr. P. C. Edmondson, it was decided to give Mr. McLeod, as chairman of the parking committee, full authority to make the necessary arrangements to have proper control of the traffic on the day of the big match. Mr. J. E. Mercer voted against the motion, saying that it was the duty of the Borough Council to provide the men, and objecting on account of financial reasons.

New work on the Gisborne-Morere highway, between Bartlett's camp and the summit of Wharerata Hill, has been affected to some extent by the recent persistent rains, and two small slips occurred yesterday, holding up early traffic for a time. A track was cut through the debris in short order once the slips were discovered, and traffic is again practically normal, though there is the likelihood that further slipping will occur from time to time until the cuttings find a natural slope. Work on the railway line has been affected by the rain, contract parties working in the open being unable to make much progress, while a slip in a deep cutting near Torrie's camp also has resulted from the steady soaking of the new work. The halt is purely temporary, however, and once the weather clears work will proceed with its old swing. Tunnelling gangs are losing no time over the wet weather, they having the advantage over outside workers in this matter.
